Montreal – The Mayor of Montreal, Mr. Gérald Tremblay, and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Public Bike System Company, Mr. Roger Plamondon, are proud to announce that the BIXI family is growing even larger. The cities of Washington (District of Columbia) and Arlington (Virginia) on the American eastern seaboard, along with the Washington State University campus, on the country’s west coast, have decided to adopt the public bike system that was first revealed in Montreal a little more than a year ago. Starting this fall, 1,100 new BIXI bikes will be found at one of the 114 stations along the Arlington- Washington corridor. Another 30 bikes will be made available for students at Washington State University.

This is good news indeed, as the expansion clearly follows the lines of the speech that Mr. Plamondon delivered this past May 6th to members of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. Appropriately titled BIXI: local product, global success, Mr. Plamondon emphasized the need for BIXI to grow by setting up this service not only in other international cities, but in campuses around the world as well (universities as well as business campuses, like that of Research in Motion, for example.) “The business plan we presented was realistic, feasable and economically viable. This is what I believed yesterday and what today’s announcements prove,” affirmed the chairman.

The future of this system on the international scene seems brighter, when it becomes clear that new sustainable solutions for public transportation are no longer of interest solely to environmental groups, but have come to the attention of municipal managers everywhere.

Montreal Mayor Gérald Tremblay stated he was “very pleased to see BIXI continue its successful growth on the international scene, showing once again that Montreal is capable of great things that inspire other cities around the globe.”

BIXI’s current expansion is the result of all the work by hundreds of Quebecers, who were able to design an innovative system that perfectly blends esthetic and practical considerations. It is important to underline the fact that economic benefits generated by BIXI’s growth in foreign markets will profit all Montrealers, who will see this system continue to improve.

“We would like to extend our most heartfelt congratulations to the Public Bike System Company for this new BIXI deployment in the American capital. Ever since BIXI was launched last week, this Québec innovation has been a global success story and we are delighted to see that aluminum stands out as the material of choice in the making of a sustainable means of transportation that contributes to the decrease of greenhouse gas emission linked to urban transportation.” said Ms. Jacynthe Côté, CEO of Rio Tinto Alcan, BIXI’s main partner.
