Continuing its commitment to fuel economy, Hyundai launched the third-generation Tucson ix Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) at the Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Energy 2011 conference in Washington, DC.

The Korean automaker claims that the 100-kilowatt fuel cell system and dual hydrogen storage cylinders allow the vehicle to travel more than 400 miles (about 640 kilometres) on a single fuelling – a range equal to a gasoline-powered car. It also achieves gasoline equivalent fuel efficiency of more than 70 miles per gallon (3.36 L/100 km).

Range and fuel efficiency are up 76 and 15 percent, respectively, over the previous version. What's more, the fuel cell system was downsized by 20 percent via modularization of bulky parts.

The Tucson ix FCEV won't fear the cold, either. It can start in temperatures as low as minus 25 degrees Celsius.

Hyundai will test about 50 units throughout 2011 as part of the second phase of the Korean Government Validation Program. The company plans to make a limited supply of the Tucson ix FCEV in 2012 and begin mass production in 2015.
