The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) is joining forces with the City of Vancouver and the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) to help communities prepare for the use of Electric Vehicles (EV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV). Initially founded by the Rocky Mountain Institute and in partnership with the City of Vancouver, Project Get Ready Vancouver will see BCIT champion the development of a five-year plan of action aimed at making the City of Vancouver electric vehicle ready.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, BCIT President Don Wright, and RMI Project Get Ready Project Manager Tripp Hyde “plugged-in” two electric vehicles today to symbolically mark the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Project Get Ready Vancouver.

"Vancouver has been at the forefront of pushing for electric vehicle infrastructure, and I'm confident this partnership will speed up our efforts even more," said Mayor Robertson. "Along with moving us closer to being the world's greenest city by 2020, this MOU helps Vancouver meet our Greenest City Action Plan goal of preparing for 15 per cent of all new vehicles to be electric vehicles within the next ten years."

Project Get Ready Vancouver aligns directly with the Smart Microgrid research initiative at BCIT and will provide a long-term sustainable plan for electrical grid infrastructure development and the adoption of electric vehicles in Vancouver.

"On behalf of BCIT, we are proud to be a part of Project Get Ready Vancouver," said Don Wright, president of BCIT. "Participating in progressive research with industry partners like the City of Vancouver, BC Hydro, and The Rocky Mountain Institute is critically important to BCIT. This is an opportunity for BCIT to contribute to the increased energy efficiency and reduction in greenhouse gases that are essential to creating the green economy in British Columbia."

The Rocky Mountain Institute is an independent, non-profit organization engaged in research that helps break through challenges relating to energy and resources.

"Now that the City of Vancouver is an official Project Get Ready partner, championed by BCIT, we look forward to collaborating with the region to grow it into a true electric vehicle ecosystem,” said Tripp Hyde, RMI Project Get Ready project manager. “Leveraging the resources of Project Get Ready and our other partners, together we can create a plan for charging station installation and vehicle procurement that will help build the kind of infrastructure needed to bring this clean, quiet transportation to the Lower Mainland."

This MoU follows closely on BCIT’s Group for Advanced Information Technology's recent MoU signing with Toyota Canada, BC Hydro, Province of BC, University of Victoria, and the City of Vancouver to participate in evaluation and testing Toyota's experimental Plug-In Hybrid Prius.

Vancouver is the first West Coast Canadian Partner Community to participate in Project Get Ready. It is also the first city in Canada to change its building and parking bylaws to allow for vehicle charging.
