On January 1, 2009, the Government of Canada launched a nationwide vehicle recycling program. Known as "Retire your Ride", it encourages Canadians to trade in their old, high-polluting cars and make more environmentally friendly transportation choices. The program is carried out by the Clean Air Foundation, a non-profit organization.
Among the incentives offered are discounts on transit passes, bicycles, car sharing memberships and simply $300 in cash.
The Harper government invested 92 million dollars in the program, which will run until March 2011. Currently, nearly a quarter of all vehicles on our roads were built before 1996. These models produce 19 times more pollution than similar modern vehicles.
The program also includes a national automobile recycling Code of Practice with which all participating recyclers must comply. The government thus aims to reduce emissions produced by automotive vehicles as well as the formation of smog in Canada.
