History/Description Of The Used Honda Civic: The ninth-generation Civic launched in 2011 and went on sale until 2012, when Honda issued several upgrades and improvements to address increasing competition for their elemental compact sedan.

Available in coupe or sedan variants, this generation Civic got a 1.8L 140-horsepower engine in standard models, and a 2.4L 201-horsepower 4-cylinder in the sporty Si models. All units were front-wheel drive. Automatic and manual transmission options were available on all standard models -- though the Si only came with a 6-speed manual.

Available feature content included a full colour Multi Information Display, sunroof, premium audio, steering-wheel mounted controls, Bluetooth, navigation, and more.

Finally, be sure to check the model you’re considering for wear of consumable parts, like the tires and brakes.

Common Issues With A Used Honda Civic: A “check emissions system” warning message in the instrument cluster or MID display may be caused by a faulty or poorly secured gas-cap or a bad thermostat. Check the Civic you’re considering for any other warning messages in the “maintenance minder” portion of the MID display, too. This may give an idea of any upcoming service the model you’re considering needs.

When shifting slowly and at low revs with the manual transmission, a “thunking” or “clunking” sound may be caused by a loose motor mount. Listen for the sound on your test drive, and have it addressed if present. Also, check for signs of clutch slippage on all manual-equipped models, and especially the Si. Finally, be sure the shifter doesn’t “bite” back at you when changing gears.

Avoid any used Civic model with extensive modifications to its suspension or driveline, as these can cause issues if the quality of the parts and installation aren’t top-notch. Additionally, some modifications may violate laws in certain locales. For added peace of mind, stick with as close-to-stock a model as possible.
