Following its North American and Canadian premieres in Detroit and Montreal, respectively, the Honda Civic Si Concept made an appearance at the 2011 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto, providing more details about the next generation. The latter will prove more efficient, more powerful in Si trim and available with ECO Assist.
ECO Assist, which is already featured on the CR-Z and Insight hybrids, will find its way into most 2012 Civic models. This technology helps owners improve their driving habits to save fuel.
Both the sedan and the coupe will retain the current generation's standard 1.8-litre, 4-cylinder i-VTEC engine that produces 140 horsepower. The four-door Civic will reportedly achieve 7.2 L/100 km in the city and 5.0 L/100 km on the highway, which would represent a 12-percent improvement over its predecessor.
Meanwhile, the 2.0-litre mill of the Civic Si (197 hp, 139 lb-ft) will be replaced with a 2.4L unit that cranks out an even 200 horsepower along with 170 lb-ft of torque through a new 6-speed manual gearbox. Despite the extra grunt, Honda claims the car will burn 2 percent less fuel.
Finally, the company also announced that the Civic Hybrid will receive minor powertrain upgrades, including larger displacement (from 1.3 to 1.5 L). Expect 110 ponies, a lithium-ion battery and a CVT.
