Hyundai is recalling approximately 883,000 Sonata sedans from 2011-2014 in the U.S. and Puerto Rico due to a problem with the transmission cable.

It remains to be determined whether this recall affects any vehicles in Canada.

In some cases, the transmission cable may detach from the shift-lever pin, causing the gear selection not to match the indicated gear, according to documents posted Wednesday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

As a result, these Sonatas could move in an unintended or unexpected direction, even with the shift lever in Park, leading to possible injuries.

Hyundai, which has yet to comment on the recall, has identified 1,171 warranty claims and seven incidents related to this issue. Dealers will inspect and repair the connection between the transmission cable and shift lever at no cost, as needed.

The automaker plans to notify owners of the recall by mail during the third quarter.
