Now, can this Hyundai compete with other luxury cars? Well, it all depends on what luxury cars we are talking about. But at that price (just below $32,000 CDN), I think, it does not have that much competition. Not only does the exterior have a luxury look, the interior is also well detailed. The dashboard does not really stand out but it still has a very conventional look that will please more than one customer. The instrumentation is clear and well placed and the whole center console is well stacked up. The seats are comfortable but I never liked leather because it is cold in winter and hot and sticky in summer. Oh well, that?s my taste! Overall, though, the fit and finish was excellent. And the driving position allowed for a comfortable drive and an excellent visibility.
On the road, I liked the silence and comfort but I should have to point out the annoying suspension noise in the front and in the steering when I hit some of the most important potholes found on Quebec roads. The engine is smooth and good enough for everyday driving. But it will never make the XG300 a sport sedan, that?s for sure. As for the five-speed tranny, during the first days of my testing, it acted kind of funny even not reacting (no kickdown) during a passing situation. Later during the week, it worked fine. Bizarre!
Finally, my experience with the XG300 was a very pleasant one. Most people that saw the car liked it. As far as I am concerned, it can measure up to many more expensive Japanese luxury cars except for a few little details. My good friend John Davis of the PBS TV Motorweek show told me at the Chicago Auto Show that him and his crew liked it better than Lexus products. That I am not sure of. But still, I think that Hyundai?s got it right with the XG300.
