Some artists like to use small, delicate brushes. Others, like Ian Cook, take a somewhat more excentric approach. The British artist likes to paint with radio controlled cars. But for his most recent piece, he decided to take things one step further, calling on – among other things – a big rig truck.

This is what Cook calls “Popbang Colour.” It’s movement in the service of art: painting with the moving wheels of a vehicle. An original way to replace the humble paint brush, to say the least!

The recent piece measures 10 x 5 metres and was commissioned by engine oil company Comma, who’ll use it for a promotional campaign highlighting its association with the FIA’sFormula 2 championship.

Cook first spent 40 hours in his Birmingham studio using his favourite tool, the radio controlled car. He then completed his creation at the Brands Hatch track after 8 extra hours using a go-kart, a Caterham R300, a Formula 2 car, a racing bike and a six-tonne ERF truck.

So what’s next? An Airbus, or maybe a space shuttle?
