The Associated Press confirmed the death of former IndyCar racer David Walther, who passed away Thursday, at the age of 65.

Walther's nickname "Salt" came to him from his years of racing hydroplane. On top of his career racing on the sea, "Salt" totalled 64 starts in IndyCar, as well as four NASCAR races.

He even appeared in an episode of The Dukes of Hazzard.

Unfortunately, it was his horror crash at the start of the 1973 Indy 500 that made him (in)famous.

"Salt" did manage a return to racing afterwards, despite a painkillers addiction, even recording his best Indy result (ninth) in 1977.

Sad to say his career was always dampened by his playboy reputation.
