The Sao Paulo IndyCar race has been red-flagged two times after enormous downpours hit the Brazilian street venue on Sunday forcing organisers to report start to Monday.

The race was first green flagged in wet conditions and right at the start, Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti Autosports) ploughed into the tyres at the first corner while Helio Castroneves (Penske), Simona de Silvestro (HVM), Danica Patrick (Andretti Autosports) and Tony Kanaan (KV Racing) were also involved in an accident that took them out of the race.

Others, among them Scott Dixon (Ganassi), Graham Rahal (Ganassi), Justin Wilson (Dryer & Reinbold), Sebastien Bourdais (Dale Coyne) and James Hinchcliffe were also involved in further incidents at the first restart, before the race was halted on lap nine; organisers allowing the whole field to return to the indoor paddock and let teams work on their cars during the long stoppage.

Restart was given later in the afternoon but still the rain continued to fall and with little prospect of the weather improving, the decision was taken to red flag the race again after several low-speed laps under yellow.

The start of the rescheduled race is now set to take place at 9.05am local time Monday May 2nd.
