Starting in July, Alfa Romeo will launch in Europe its all-new compact car, the highly ambitious MiTo.

The styling is directly inspired from the brand's gorgeous 8C Competizione sports coupe, particularly the "triple lobe" intake marking the front bumper. The shape of the front headlights and LED taillights is also similar.

To achieve compact dimensions, the entire design process was focused on minimizing the number of components as much as possible. Everything has been reduced: the overall size and weight, the engine, CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. Still, Alfa promises that the interior offers plenty of room for all on board.

With regard to handling, the Alfa Romeo MiTo features a McPherson-type independent front suspension and a semi-independent rear setup with torsion bar, not to mention four-wheel disc brakes. The car only takes 34 meters to stop from 100 to 0 km/h. An innovative electronic technology called Q2 mimics the action of a limited-slip differential. Upon exiting corners, the system slows the inside wheel and prevents it from spinning while redistributing power to the outside wheel. This ensures optimum torque split and cornering grip at all times.

A choice of three engines will be available with the MiTo. The most potent of the trio is a 1.4L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 155 horsepower. Next is a 1.6L diesel developing 120 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. Finally, Alfa Romeo will offer a toned-down 1.4L boasting 78 horsepower. All are mated to a 6-speed manual transmission.

As for safety, no compromises were made. The MiTo includes 7 airbags and a host of electronic driving aids: stability and traction control, hill-start assist, ABS, emergency braking assist and wheel locking mitigation upon sudden release of the throttle.

The MiTo targets young drivers looking for a safe, high-performing, fuel-efficient and obviously stylish compact car. It will have no problems meeting their needs. The only real downside -- and it's a major one -- is that North American buyers won't be able to enjoy it... at least for now!
