American Le Mans Series two-time championship winning team Highcroft Racing is evaluating the possibility of running a partial programme in the IZOD IndyCar Series in 2011 in preparation for a full-time commitment in 2012.

The team boss, Duncan Dayton says Highcroft Racing is growing closer to joining the ranks of open-wheel entrants. While it is a bit premature to make any kind of announcement, Dayton concedes that his organisation needs to broaden its horizons and consider something besides ALMS.

Fielding a full-time IndyCar program would be a better fit for 2012, according to Dayton, but learning the ropes at select rounds in 2011 is what’s currently being explored. The primary focus for 2011 will be the ALMS, but they are striving towards doing a couple of one-offs in IndyCar, maybe in cooperation with an existing team.

Although securing Highcroft’s place on the 2011 IndyCar grid for a limited campaign is still a work in progress, IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard says that adding a team of Highcroft’s caliber to the paddock would be a major boost to the series.
