No longer just a rumour, Car and Driver reports that Volkswagen confirmed the US availability of the Golf R, a high-performance version of the popular hatchback, in 2012.
The Americans, who can already purchase the Passat CC R-Line, will be able to grab a copy of the famous pocket rocket that cranks out 270 horsepower and 258 pounds-foot of torque, courtesy of the much-acclaimed 2.0T engine. This is a machine that clearly talks the talk and walks the walk, with exclusive wheels, performance tires, an adjustable suspension and sports seats completing the package.
The US-spec Golf R will be available in 3- and 5-door body styles and feature standard all-wheel drive.
R is the German automaker's performance division that promises more power and sportier looks – much like BMW has the M division. The most notable member of the group is undoubtedly the Golf R32, which is revered by all VW compact car enthusiasts.
For now, there is no mention of the Golf R moving north of the border, but hopefully, Canadians will also get the opportunity to buy and drive one in the near future. If not, well, I'm sure they would make do with a Scirocco...
