British luxury 4x4 maker Land Rover yesterday celebrated 60 years of building off-road motoring icons. It was April 30 in 1948 when the original Land Rover, dubbed the Series 1, was first shown at an Amsterdam motor show.

Today, Land Rover customers and staff will be celebrating the company's long-lived success with special events and activities all summer long. They've got plenty to celebrate- including a five-model lineup and record-setting sales in 2007, totaling well over 225,000 units.

Recently, the company even received two Queens Awards for Enterprise- one for International Trade, and one for Innovation. The latter award recognized Land Rover's unique Terrain Response system, which adjusts vehicle settings and systems to maximize its performance and grip on any surface.

Land Rover has facilities in Solihull, Halewood and the English Midlands, which employ some 8,500 people directly- as well as about 40,000 more people indirectly, through suppliers.

Phil Popham, Land Rover's Managing Director, commented, "Land Rover's history is a long and illustrious one - and the future is just as exciting. We are committed to maintaining our relevance and meeting the needs of our customers in a changing global environment. Earlier this year, we unveiled a glimpse into our possible future - the diesel hybrid LRX cross-coupe concept. This signals that Land Rover will continue to evolve, with capability, premium values and sustainable motoring at the top of the agenda."
