Looks like taking out the bud vase worked — December buyers of the newly redesigned 21st-century 2012 VW Beetle comprised 50% men, up from 36% a year earlier, according to Edmunds.

Since it went on sale in September, the more masculine Bug has drawn 43% male buyers in the U.S., up from 29% the year prior.

Edmunds, an automotive researcher in Santa Monica, California, says that according to their demographic tracking, had the third-highest percentage of female registrants in the U.S. last year, behind Nissan’s Rogue crossover and another VW, the Eos hardtop convertible.

With plans to up U.S. sales to a million a year by 2018 from about 444,000 last year, Volksagen is counting on the broader appeal of its manlier Beetle. The marque introduced a TDI version in Chicago, an electric “E-Buster” in Detroit, and a high-performance Beetle R in Los Angeles.

But you can’t please everyone. According to Advertising Age, one dealer near Boston complained that women are less than enthusiastic about it. “I think (they) made it too manly.”
