Maybach's future has been up in the air for months now. Last week, rumours of an alliance with Aston Martin once again made headlines and today, Automotive News is reporting that a second lifeline may exist through Mercedes-Benz.

Daimler originally said it would decide the fate of Maybach by July 1, but that decision has been delayed until late July, leaving more time to explore the idea of selling the Maybach 57, 62 and Laundaulet under a Mercedes-Benz sub-brand.

This new option and development show how serious the final move will be, yet it doesn't mean a partnership with Aston Martin goes out the window.

To this day, the British carmaker has created four concepts for Daimler based on the next-generation S-class architecture.

A third but less desirable option, sources say, is to kill the Maybach brand, which only sold 200 vehicles in 2010.

Will a second-generation Maybach finally get the green light? More importantly, will it prove to be enough to get back on track and enjoy success in a market dominated by Bentley and Rolls-Royce?
