Mazda will add a mini-minivan to its stable of cars next year when it launches the Mazda5.

Dynamic doesn't mean ''Zoom-Zoom'' in the Mazda5. Fekunaga says that it relates relates instead to ''reliability together with excellent handling characteristics and innovative styling. This package was achieved without compromises in characteristics such as balancing the need for brisk acceleration with handling that feels natural and reassuring to both driver and passengers.''

Fekunaga also says that the sedan-like design of the instrument panel and ''sweeping line of its upper section provide a clear view that former sedan drivers will find immediately familiar and comfortable.''

The centre of the Mazda5's dashboard has been raised to position the controls where the driver can easily reach them, says the program boss, ''as well as improving visibility and operation.''

That console also includes the gearshift lever, which is pretty uncommon in North America and not widely liked. This was done, Fekunaga says, because of ''analysis of muscle movement when operating the lever.''

While the achievement of interior comfort and versatility were priorities in Mazda5 development, Fekuhanga says, the vehicle still ''must deliver the signature Mazda driving dynamics of responsiveness, neutral handling and linear, controllable braking if it is to embody the full spirit of Zoom-Zoom.''

The 1.8- 2-litre, 16-valve four-cylinder engines have been tuned to ''deliver optimum performance in this new vehicle matched to a smooth action five-speed manual transmission.''

From the smaller engine the Mazda5 will get 115 hp at 6,000 rpm and about 120 lb-ft of torque at 4,200 rpm.

From the larger engine the Mazda5 will get 145 hp at 6,000 rpm and about 145 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm.

Exact equipment levels and prices will be announced closer to the Mazda5's on-sale date, but an informed guess is that it will cost more than the Mazda3 but less than the Mazda6, which would mean generally in the $25,000 to $30,000 range.
