Check Mazda's turbo all-wheel drive sedan for rear-end issues
History/Description: Are you a Canadian driver? Do you bravely hit the roads in winter rather than quivering inside near a heat source, cringing at the thought of low-traction driving conditions? Would you rather rip donuts in the Costco parking lot after it closes than actually shop there? If you answered ‘yes’ to the first two questions, chances are you need a MAZDASPEED6.

Of course, this turbocharged, all-wheel drive, surface-to-surface missile of a sedan is no longer a part of the new-car market in Canada – though more and more units are popping up in the used marketplace.

Available in 2006 and 2007, the MAZDASPEED6 amounted to a tweaked-up version of the standard Mazda6 on which it was based. With a 2.3-litre turbo engine that cranked out 274 horsepower, the sporty model came only with a 6-speed manual transmission, AWD and a host of premium features. Look for keyless ignition, xenon lights, a sunroof, heated leather, Bose audio, automatic climate control and plenty more.

What Owners Like:
Most MAZDASPEED6 owners report enjoying plenty of power, good gas mileage, discreet and mature looks and a plethora of upscale features. All-weather traction, a luxurious cabin and plenty of driving thrills are also highly rated. A great blend of performance and luxury round out the package.

What Owners Dislike: The MAZDASPEED6’s aggressive clutch is a common complaint, with numerous owners wishing for smoother and ‘easier’ engagement from the leftmost pedal. Some wish for better performance from the Bose stereo system and a more aggressive exhaust note. Finally, the MSP6 does require pricier premium gasoline.

Common Issues With A Used MAZDASPEED6:
As with any sporty and powerful car, the MAZDASPEED6 has some wear-related issues that used vehicle shoppers should be aware of. Remember that cars like the MSP6 are designed for sporty, performance driving – but that abusive driving coupled with poor maintenance can cause problems.

In a used MAZDASPEED6, some issues have surfaced with rear differential and axle problems, which could affect the differential bracket, drive axles or even the bolts that hold the whole system together. Test drivers should note any unwelcomed noises from the rear of their potential MSP6.
