Mercedes-Benz announced that it will set up its own production of fuel cell stacks in Vancouver, B.C. By doing so, the company will bundle the development and production for one of the key components of its fuel cell-powered electric vehicles.

Construction of a facility will begin immediately in a 2,000-square metre space in a new Burnaby location and finish in early 2012. Small-series production of next-generation fuel cell stacks for the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, E-Class and B-Class F-CELL will start in 2013.

In the meantime, the fuel cell stacks will continue to be produced at Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation (AFCC), a joint venture between Daimler (50.1%), Ford (30%) and Ballard (19.9%) also located in Burnaby.

In related news, three B-Class F-CELL models are currently travelling 30,000 kilometres around the globe in the Mercedes-Benz F-CELL World Drive to demonstrate the high technical maturity of fuel cell technology and press all involved parties to accelerate the construction of the necessary network of hydrogen fuelling stations.
