It’s not uncommon to have a time capsule buried at an historical building site. But, when it comes to race tracks, it’s a real novelty.

Daytona International Speedway has always had a special place in the hearts of racers. Now it will have a time capsule with a little help of NASCAR Sprint Cup driver, Jeff Burton.

The storied track is having a complete repaving, for only the second time in its 52-year history and a little bit of something special was needed.

The main project will use an estimated 50,000 tons of asphalt to repave more than 1.4 million square feet and has a target completion date of Jan. 1, 2011.

Meanwhile Track president, Joie Chitwood III and Burton had a project of their own.

All sorts of memorabilia from racing programs, newspapers and a series sponsor Sprint Blackberry phone were placed in the capsule.

The track showed a sense of humour by adding a bit of the famous pothole, which caused the lengthy repairs and delay to the 2009 running of the Daytona 500.

“It’s really cool to be here,” said Burton, who added he would like to come back to Daytona someday to dig up the time capsule.

“The history of this race track and the France family actually building this track with their own hands and (now) seeing it reconstructed, it’s pretty cool. This track is going to make racing incredible. What you’re going to see is three wide and two wide all the time.

“The technology in the asphalt and the technology in the grading makes the track so smooth and makes so much grip that you’re not going to be afraid to put it three wide. You’re going to be able to put that car where ever you want to put it.”
