Michael Waltrip, one of NASCAR’s “characters,” and co-owner of Michael Waltrip Racing has started a flurry of speculation after posting a photo of himself and his #15 NAPA Toyota in a current configuration, right down to the shark fin on the driver’s side right rear, on Facebook.
Waltrip who retired from full-time driving for his team after this year’s Daytona 500 has won two Daytona 500s and one 400 miler. He last drove at Talladega for Prism Racing.
As there was no text to go along with the photo fans of Michael Waltrip Racing commented in droves speculating that the 46-year old would be back on the high banks of Daytona.
He will be driving that car, on the Daytona weekend of July 2-4th this year only it will be on the other side of the Atlantic. A spokesman for the team confirmed that Waltrip is scheduled to run in the United Kingdom that weekend at Goodwood’s Festival of Speed. That photograph of him, and the car displays the vehicle he’ll be driving that weekend.
“That’s such an honor,” said Waltrip in a team release. “Just about everybody in the world knows about Goodwood and the racing that goes on there. It’s another sign of NASCAR’s acceptance all around the world. The really cool part about traveling to Dubai was to have people from all over the world come up to you and ask you about something that happened in NASCAR. I was amazed how knowledgeable and up on NASCAR they were. It’s eye opening how closely they follow everything we are doing back home.”
