Steven Wallace, son of 1989 NASCAR Champion Driver (and television commentator) Rusty Wallace, was fined by Nationwide Series officials for a post-race incident immediately following the race at Memphis Motorsports Park.
Near the checkered flag in the race, Sprint Cup regular Matt Kenseth hit the back of Wallace’s car, causing a spin which brought out the final caution in the race. Wallace returned the favor, hitting Kenseth’s car after the checkered flag. Wallace was then summoned to the NASCAR official’s hauler.
In a statement NASCAR Nationwide officials said “Wallace has been fined $5,000 and placed on probation until Dec. 31, 2009, for violating Section 12-1 (Actions detrimental to stock car racing: Hitting another competitor’s car on pit road after the completion of the race) of the 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series rule book.”
In a related development two additional Nationwide teams (the #49 Chevrolet driven by Mark Green and the #70 Chevrolet driven by Shelby Howard) were fined and penalized for using unapproved equipment.
