Rockingham Speedway, an iconic NASCAR race track, will return to the sanctioning body’s schedule after an eight-year absence.
The Camping World Truck Series will race at the one mile oval on April 15th 2012.
Speedway Motorsports Inc. a previous owner of the track, then known as the North Carolina Speedway shut it down in 2004 in order to move its’ race date to Texas Motor Speedway after a 78-Cup race history going back to 1965.
Retired race driver, Andy Hillenburg, bought the track in 2007 but was unable to get a NASCAR race because it lacked SAFER barriers which are required by the sanctioning body.
The announcement of the race was so important that North Carolina Governor, Bev Perdue, was in attendance.
“It's a real big day for race fans around the country -- because anyone who knows anything about racing knows about the history of this fabulous track," Perdue said.
