Veteran Tony Stewart (Chevy No 14) won the rain-delayed Heluva Good! at The Glen NASCAR Sprint Cup race Monday afternoon at the 2.5-mile road course holding off Australian Marcos Ambrose (Camry No 47) who had already won the Nationwide race at the same track on Saturday afternoon.

This was Stewart’s third win in his first ever season as an owner-driver and his fifth as a Cup driver at The Glen. Carl Edwards (Ford No 99) ended up third followed by Kyle Busch (Camry No 18) and Greg Biffle (Ford No 16). Polesitter Jimmie Johnson (Chevy No 48) ended up 12th.

Among the many incidents was a red-flag situation on lap 63 caused by Kasey Kahne (Dodge No 9) and Sam Hornish (Dodge No 77) whose car hit the tire barrier bouncing back on the track thus involving Jeff Gordon (Chevy No 24), Joey Logano (Camry No 20), Andy Lally (Chevy No 71) and Jeff Burton (Chevy no 29).

Crowd favourite Dale Earnhardt Jr. (Chevy No 88) had his share of brake problems, hitting Reed Sorenson (Dodge No 43) and finally finished 39th. As for Canadians Ron Fellows ( Chevy No 09) and Patrick Carpentier (Camry No 55) they finished respectively 29th and 33rd.

Carpentier got hit on lap 21 as he was running within the top 15 while Fellows had to go to the garage for a mechanical failure. Both came back on the track but Carpentier got involved once again this time with Ryan Newman (Chevy No 39) on lap 53. Then, on lap 71, he hit ex-teammate Elliott Sadler (Dodge No 19) having to visit his pits coming back to the track only on lap 83, some 12 laps behind.

Consequently, Tony Stewart still leads the championship followed by Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch (Dodge No 2) and Denny Hamlin (Camry No 11). The NASCAR Sprint Cup series will return to action next Sunday at the Michigan International Speedway.
