NASCAR officials must feel like they are channeling the 1993 movie “Ground Hog Day” where Bill Murray’s character woke up to the same day, day after day.

For the second-straight weekend there is the likelihood of running both the Sprint Cup race and Nationwide race on the same day due to "adverse weather conditions".

The US National Weather Service predicted the threat of tornadoes in the Talladega, Alabama, area forcing officials to cancel Sprint Cup qualifying and postpone the Nationwide race.

A track release said: “In the interest of fan safety, all activities scheduled at Talladega Superspeedway on Saturday have been postponed due to the significant threat of extended periods of severe weather. This decision was made based on advice from the National Weather Service and the Talladega County Emergency Management Agency.”

The Cup race start time, Sunday at noon local time, has not been changed, and the Nationwide race will run following the Cup checkered flag meaning drivers running both races, commonly refered to as “double-duty,” will race 812 miles on Sunday.

According to NASCAR rules the field will line up according to owner’s points putting Jimmie Johnson, the points’ leader, on the pole. Terry Cook and Aric Amirola will not make the Cup race.

Ryan Newman will go to rear of field because he had to switch to a backup car after a crash in practice.

Jeff Burton, in the RCR Chevrolet, was fastest at 199.467mph in final practice.

Sunday’s race will be the first one for the spoiler on the rear deck of a Cup COT car replacing the original wing.
