Audi's new Q5 is coming, and the folks in Ingolstadt say that it's going to be the sportiest SUV in its class. Intended for sport-sedan manners and SUV flexibility, the brand's latest will combine quattro permanent all-wheel drive with efficient engines for capable performance both on and off of the road.

Measuring in at 4.6 meters long, 1.9 meters wide and just 1.6 meters tall, the Q5 takes a place just below its big brother, the Q7, and boasts a benchmark-setting drag coefficient of just 0.33. Trademark styling cues are present, including large wheels, chrome trim bits and those sexy LED-stringed running lights to accent the available bi-xenon projectors.

Power for us North Americans comes solely from Audi's 3.2-liter V6 engine, with 265 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque. That's mated to a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission and the quattro all wheel drive system--which can send up to 85 percent of engine power to the rear wheels as needed. In other markets, the Q5 is available with turbocharged gas and diesel engines, as well as a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Standard features will include an electric parking brake, intelligent key, three-zone climate control and an instrument cluster-mounted computer. A next-generation MMI interface, navigation and premium stereo will be available as well.

Q5 goes on sale early next year.
