Ford Motor Company has just announced new innovations that will be made available on their new upcoming models.

New 3.5L V6

Perhaps of most interest is a new DOHC 3.5L V6 that will be launched along with next year's all-new Ford Edge and Lincoln Aviator crossovers. Power output is rated at 250 hp and 240 lb/ft of torque thanks in part to variable intake valve timing. This new powerplant will be a building block in Ford's arsenal as it will find its way under the hood in 1 out of 5 Ford vehicles by 2010.

Interestingly, the 3.5L occupies the same volume in an engine compartment as the Duratec 3.0L V6. Because the future will demand changes, the 3.5L is prepared and designed to accept technologies such as direct injection and turbo charging.

Hybrid news

Ford is now well on its way to delivering on its promise to produce
Escape Hybrid (Photo: Ford Motor Company)
250,000 hybrid vehicles per year by 2010. The first generation Hybrids are already available in the form of the Escape and Mercury Mariner Hybrids. The second generation will find its way in the new Fusion and Mercury Milan Hybrids. The Ford engineering department is already well under way with Generation III of the Hybrid transaxle. For future vehicles, both 4 and 6-cylinder engines hybrids will be possible.

New York taxis and Ford Crown Victoria are basically synonyms and have been for many years. The future has now arrived. Ford has announced that today, they will debut a Ford Escape Hybrid taxi that will carry passengers through all five New York City boroughs.

At the moment, the Kansas City assembly plant puts 24,000 hybrids together every year.

New 6-speed automatic transmission

The new V6 in the Ford Edge and Lincoln Aviator will be mated to a new 6-speed automatic transmission. The reason for a 6-speed autobox is simple. It delivers better performance and more importantly, better fuel economy. It has been proven that the extra ratios can reduce fuel consumption by up to 7%. This new transmission has been co-developed with General Motors however they will use different controls and calibrations to better represent the make's typical characteristics.
