Nissan wants to recycle 97 percent of all wastes produced by auto manufacturing

During the annual Environmental Conference and Awards organized by the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Nissan North America's Smyrna plant was presented an award for hazardous waste management. A number of improvements in the efficiency of painting to incorporate the plant's practice of "color-blocking" reduced the volume of purge solvent, which led to savings of over $1 million as well as a fairly significant reduction in toxic gas emissions.

NNA also received an "Achievement Certificate" for its successful practice of recycling and reducing wastes destined for off-site landfills. In 2003, 8.6 pounds of hazardous waste per vehicle was generated and by 2005, that amount was down to 6.09 pounds per vehicle - almost a 30 percent reduction in just two years. Encouraged by such positive results, plant executives have set quite an ambitious goal for 2006: recycling 97 percent of all wastes produced by auto manufacturing!
