Nissan became the first automaker in Europe to sell a car via Twitter when one of its Spanish dealers managed to complete the sale of an X-Trail crossover ― from the initial contact with the customer to the final decision to purchase ― on the popular social media website.

The dealer used the hashtag #comparuncocheportwitter (in English, ‘buy a car on Twitter’).

Nissan’s unique business approach included using the video streaming platform Periscope to film the X-Trail, with the dealer presenting all of the vehicle’s key features in a personalised walk-through which was uploaded to a live stream.

Keys to the X-Trail were delivered directly to the customer’s home by courier to complete the online transaction. Delivery of the vehicle took place at the brand’s Spanish Headquarters, where Nissan and the customer first made real contact.

What about you? Is buying a car via social media something you would consider? Or do you prefer the classic method of visiting a dealership?
