Those who were expecting a hybrid variant of the new Land Rover Evoque will have to make do with a fuel-efficient gasoline-powered model instead. In other words, the company's baby crossover won't follow in the footsteps of its predecessor, the LRX Concept.

''Our approach to Evoque is more viable for the company and customers because hybrid technology on a relatively small car would load the price and add weight,'' claims Land Rover’s global brand director John Edwards. ''Our engineers have done a great job reducing weight on Evoque.''

Edwards went on to say that the hybrid powertrain will be applied first to heavier vehicles, including the next-generation Discovery.
