A study published in the European Respiratory Journal reveals that 1 out of 7 chronic asthma cases may be the direct result of traffic-related air pollution.

Researchers compared children living near a major boulevard (10,000+ vehicles per day) with others living farther away. As they found out, the former had a higher number of asthmatics.

“Based on our findings, approximately 14% of all reported asthma cases among children can be attributed to traffic pollution. In other words, these children would not suffer from asthma if they were living away from a heavily polluted urban area,” the study reports.

Similar observations were made with older people. In fact, 28% of heart diseases are reportedly caused by traffic pollution.

The study was conducted in 10 European cities, including five in Spain.
