Currently, those who acquire an electric vehicle can only recharge it from an ordinary outlet installed at their home. No infrastructures actually exist that enable eco-friendly drivers to stock up on electricity. That's where the Ontario government and Better Place, a California firm specializing in the field, are coming in.

To achieve their goal, Better Place will establish itself in Ontario, building an electric vehicle demo and opening an information centre in Toronto. As for the Ontarian government, it will conduct a study to determine the best ways to speed up the introduction of electric cars on its territory, such as incentive programs, reserved lanes, the introduction of electric vehicles in government fleets, education programs and promotional campaigns.

The Better Place model is designed so that drivers of the electric car take out a subscription to use its network of battery exchange stations and home, work and parking lot charge spots. Bullfrog Power will supply the electricity from green facilities to allow the government to eliminate the coal-fired plants by 2014. Better Place estimates that for 10,000 electric vehicles in Ontario, over 40,000 tons of carbon dioxide will be eliminated.
