Ontario's first highway roundabout intersection was opened today at Highway 33 and County Road 1 west of Picton.

Formerly a traditional intersection, this new roundabout directs drivers around a circular central island in a counter clockwise direction to get to their desired exit. This new roundabout will improve driver safety, traffic speed and delays, and improve air quality from emissions and noise pollution in the area.

"This new roundabout intersection will reduce the number of collisions in the area, improve the flow of goods and people across this highway and improve the quality of life for the surrounding communities," said Jim Bradley, Ontario’s Minister of Transportation.

More than 5,200 drivers use Highway 33 every day. The decision to build a roundabout near Picton comes after the release of a study showing that this type of intersection reduces motor accidents by an average of 39 percent.
