Quebec,
The ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ) and the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) inform users that a vast speed surveillance operation will be conducted tomorrow in certain roadwork zones.

The purpose of this major operation is to remind drivers of the importance of slowing down to the posted speed limit when they are passing through a roadwork zone. Traffic conditions are different in these zones, particularly due to the configuration of the sites, the narrowness of the roads and the presence of workers.

Speeding is still considered to be the main cause of accidents on roadwork sites. In 2008, more than 11,000 speeding tickets were issued in roadwork zones, or about 78% of the total number of such statements of offence issued at the approaches to roadwork sites (over 14,000). The MTQ and the SQ always consider it a priority line of intervention to increase road user awareness and devote the necessary efforts to this purpose.

Particularly this summer, with nearly 50,000 people at work on 1,715 roadwork sites, cooperation by all road users is necessary to prevent accidents, which unfortunately happen every year. Indeed, from 2006 to 2008, 875 accidents occurred in work zones, resulting in nearly 1,200 victims, including 9 deaths.

This concerted action also reflects the government’s will to improve the road accident toll in a period conducive to more frequent trips and, all too often, fatal accidents. Last year, during the construction holiday, 31 deaths were deplored, 40% more than in 2007 for the same period.

Speed Surveillance Day in Roadwork Zones is part of the 9th edition of the Plan d’action en matière de sécurité sur les sites de travaux routiers (Action plan pertaining to the safety of roadwork sites) produced by the MTQ in collaboration with several partners, including the SQ. Moreover, to support these initiatives the MTQ has been running a vast public awareness campaign for the past few weeks.

Remember that the 2009 Edition of Operation Orange will be held simultaneously on roadwork sites located in several regions all over Québec. Signs will be installed at the approaches to the targeted sites to inform users of the operation.

Finally, police surveillance will be increased during the roadwork season. Users therefore are urged to be prudent and vigilant at all times when they are driving on the road network and to find out about roadwork by visiting www.quebec511.gouv.qc.ca or calling 511.
