"This was an experiment to build horsepower reliability at an unknown level using mainly stock parts," noted engine builder Richard Lee. "What's more, we didn't have the luxury of using aftermarket parts during the development process."
GM Powertrain engineer Jim "Gabe" Poplawski provided critical engine calibration and developed a customized data acquisition program for the Bonneville. One of the major hurdles was determining the proper fuel supply for a racetrack located 4,260 feet above sea level. That number jumped to 7,100 corrected altitude when the 100 degree plus air temperatures were factored in.
"Modifying the production calibration and the computer controller from stock to race was a very complicated process," said Poplawski, "but we knew the L67 Bonneville platform was up to the challenge."
PERFORMANCE TESTS ADD MORE PROOF THAT BONNEVILLE IS THE CAR TO BEAT
According to Bob Kraut, brand manager for Bonneville, the new speed record underscores recently completed performance test results that highlight Bonneville's ability for speed: Under strict testing procedures, the luxury sport sedan Bonneville SSEi recently outperformed the Chrysler 300M, Lexus GS 300 and Lincoln LS in key acceleration tests.
"With our win at the Salt Flats and the recent affirmation of the Bonneville's acceleration capabilities against our competition, we think we've proven without a doubt that the prestige is in the performance," said Kraut. "Bonneville came to the game ready to play and we've proven both times that this is a serious contender for anyone looking for a bold and exciting alternative to the boredom of traditional luxury."
