The Draw:
Big on comfort, headroom, storage capacity, and interior volume, Versa owners loved the amount of useful space Nissan’s designers packed into their machines. Easy entry and exit were also noted, as was the Versa’s unique style. Transmission choices include manual, automatic or CVT, depending on the model in question. Here was a sensible, nice-to-drive compact hatch that was ready for a wide variety of lifestyles. Not surprisingly, all models were 4-cylinder, front-drive.

What to Check: Though Nissan’s XTronic CVT seems fairly solid, several issues have been reported. Be sure to “listen” to and “feel” the transmission on a test drive, noting that rattling or erratic behaviour needs to be checked out by a Nissan mechanic ahead of your agreement to purchase. Stick to a manual-equipped model if possible, if you have any concerns. A handful of earlier units experienced “piston slap,” oil burning and even engine failure. Be sure the model you’re considering is healthy by noting any signs of burning oil or excessive noise or roughness from the engine. Pop the hood and listen to the Versa’s 1.8L engine idle, making sure its purring like a kitten, not clattering away like a diesel truck. A check for proper operation from all interior electronics is also advised.
