Performance automaker Porsche today released more details on a new model line that's got the industry excited. A four-door GT car, the Panamera is the fourth machine in Porsche's model range, and it's going to be available as a hybrid.

Using the same gasoline and electric drive system as the upcoming Cayenne Hybrid, Panamera's hybrid powerplant has the ability to intelligently combine electric and gasoline power in any ratio according to driving conditions. Porsche claims their hybrid system can reduce fuel usage up to 30 percent.

An electric motor and clutch-pack are placed in the driveline between the engine and transmission, fed power from a battery module located below the vehicle's cargo hold. As the car can run solely on battery power, zero-emissions driving is possible- as is enhanced performance when the electric system augments the gas engine's output.

Of course, the automaker stresses that the Panamera model, no matter how powered, will deliver driving dynamics characteristic of a Porsche product. The new four-seater will go on sale around 2009 with gas-only power, and the hybrid model will go on sale at a later date.
