Ford rally bosses Gerard Quinn and Malcolm Wilson have praised the contribution that Petter Solberg has made to the Blue Oval's factory team since his return.

Petter Solberg, who left Ford to join Subaru midway through the 2000 season, was recruited to partner Jari-Matti Latvala following Mikko Hirvonen’s defection to Citroen.

Heading to round five in Argentina later this month, the Norwegian former world champion, who is co-driven by Briton Chris Patterson, is second in the title race, four points behind leader Sebastien Loeb.

"Because the team has got a very close bond, it can be difficult for somebody new coming to try to become part of the team and get embraced by that bond," said Ford Racing motorsport manager Quinn. "But it’s been a very smooth transition and he increases the interest and the footfall through our service area, which is good for us and also good for the sport."

Malcolm Wilson also acknowledged Solberg’s contribution. The Ford team boss said: "He’s brought another dimension to the team and he’s certainly raised the profile of the team because of his following and fan base he has. But he’s also bought world championship-winning experience to the team and he’s working well with Jari and in some ways helping him. We’re really happy with him and we know he’s capable of winning."
