As part of Carpool Week, tire maker Goodyear has made public the results of a study on carpooling undertaken with Smart Commute. Despite high gas prices and environmental concern, only 17% of Ontarians carpool, the study says.

Interestingly, the 18-24 age group which will make up Ontario's future workforce seems to be more green-oriented- taking a team approach to commuting.

"In the last three years alone, carpooling has removed the equivalent of three billion cigarettes worth of air pollution in the GTA," said Ryan Lanyon, Project Director at Smart Commute. "Smart Commute and Goodyear are urging all commuters to carpool safely today so we can all breathe easier tomorrow."

Of course, safety on the commute is another concern, and Goodyear has provided safety teams to perform tire checks, ensuring the roadworthiness of carpool vehicles. Goodyear says that over 80 percent of those surveyed have concern about the roadworthiness of the vehicle used to take them to work.

Ian McIntosh, General Manager at Goodyear Canada commented. "If you're a carpooler, a quick inspection of your tires should be as routine as the morning coffee run." Tires should be rotated, checked for pressure and inspected according to manufacturer specifications for maximum safety and confidence.

Carpool week starts September 17th.
