Internet Radio is the next best thing in in-car listening
Using Slacker is as simple as visiting their site, signing up with your email address, selecting a seed list of songs and beginning to listen to music you can enjoy, and then “like” or “dislike.”

Numerous genres are available, and the premium Slacker memberships even allow on-device storage of entire stations, or on-demand playback of any song or album available. I listen mainly to rock and alternative, and I found content selection to be virtually as fresh and current as on satellite radio.

I use a Bluetooth-equipped Android phone, and have wirelessly streamed my personal Slacker station (I named it “Justin’s Tuneage”) into the audio system of test-cars like the Dodge Charger, Ford Focus, BMW 528i and others. No Bluetooth in your ride? Just plug your phone in with an audio jack instead.

And when I’m done driving, that station is waiting for me on my home PC, where I listen to it all day. And it plays in my kitchen via my laptop while I’m cooking. I rock it at the gym on my headphones, too. So Slacker is great for in-car use, but it’s also ready for you to listen, wherever you might be.

Downsides? If you don’t have a robust data plan on your phone, Slacker Radio can chew up your megabytes quickly. And you can’t “like” or “dislike” a song while you’re driving without picking up your phone, which could get you a ticket. And there’s no Howard Stern. But that might be a plus.

Additionally, you won’t hear your local news or weather, or live broadcasts, on your Slacker station. Yet.

“The advantages that broadcast radio today have over personal radio solutions are typically tied back to hyper-local content with FM radio, as well as live programming,” Sasse comments. “At Slacker we are quickly making progress toward delivering in each of those areas, because we aren't limited by bandwidth. XM has limitations on how many stations they can provide — but we can continue to add content to our service to meet our listener’s needs”.

Slacker internet radio is a free, easy-to-access service that you can sign up for in moments to take in a unique, two-way listening experience.
