Jeep offers various 4x4 systems to match different needs and drivers
Freedom-Drive I also incorporates a 4x4 ‘lock’ function engaged by a simple electronic switch. When activated, the centre coupler is pre-emptively locked, and all four wheels are powered for maximum traction at all times. You may never need to shovel the driveway again.

Downsides? With no low-range setting and limited ground clearance, you’ll have to park at the entrance of more serious trails.

Freedom Drive II
In plain English, Freedom Drive II is like Freedom Drive I on steroids. It offers the same decision-free operation and pre-emptive lockability while adding a 19:1 ‘crawl’ ratio via special programming within the CVT transmission to which it’s mated.

If you’re looking mainly for fuss-free traction but actually plan to hit some trails, Freedom Drive II should leave you very well equipped. The crawl ratio makes quick work of nasty obstacles, and it even enables equipped Patriot models to wear Jeep’s ‘Trail Rated’ badge. Ride height is increased in models with Freedom Drive II as well, and most owners won’t run out of capability.

The system also works with Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control to put the kibosh on slipping and sliding while tackling steep, slippery grades. In fact, with snow tires mounted, the tested Patriot was able to stop fully on a steep hill in 8-inches of snow and still carry right on up.

Command-Trac I
Planning to hit some tougher trails? The Jeep Wrangler’s standard Command-Trac I system offers part-time 4x4 operation in an all-purpose 4x4 ‘HIGH’ setting, as well as a 4x4 ‘LOW’ option for maximum crawability.

Command-Trac I is engineered with some of the world’s most serious off-road and low-traction situations in mind, and it’s built with beefier components and a higher degree of controllability intended for off-road enthusiasts.

Remember--added beefiness means added weight, and added weight means some added fuel consumption. Few if any machines can match a Jeep Wrangler’s prowess in snow mud or sand, though shoppers should be sure they need the additional capability it offers.
