Speed, power and flexibility combine in the market's latest hot-rod SUV models
Model: Infiniti FX50 S (Soon to be the QX70 S)

Starting Price:
$65,100

Overview:
The FX50 is sort of like a sports sedan wearing a backpack. Stuck somewhere between a station wagon and an SUV, it’s low, wide and elegant, like a sports coupe -- yet comes with V8 power, AWD, and even a bit of off-road capability.

The big draw to this model is its engine. The FX50 gets Infiniti’s up-level 5.0L V8, namely a silky smooth gem that generates 390 free-revving horsepower with an authoritative howl. This isn’t a purebred, performance-only machine, but rather a unique, striking luxury tourer with a distinctively athletic side. All models get a 7-speed automatic with manual mode and downshift rev-matching.

Look for multi-piston brakes, a performance-tuned chassis, performance wheel and tire package, and a full suite of driver assist systems and connectivity options.

Pros:
The FX50 is a discreet performer that doesn’t make its power output or handling capabilities the centre of your attention. As easy to drive to the store as it is on a handling course, it’s a machine exhaustively engineered for pleasing dynamics in any situation.

Cons: As a sport-ute with the lines of a coupe, the FX50 offers limited cargo space and limited headroom for taller drivers.

Noteworthy: Infinti’s intelligent AWD system reads the road’s surface and traction levels continuously, compares what it sees to throttle position, vehicle speed and steering input, and makes millisecond decisions to fully optimize tractability in all conditions.

When required, up to 50% of engine power can be sent to the front wheels for more grip. Otherwise, the system reverts to fully rear-drive operation for enhanced agility and dynamic response.
