The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has been testing two Tesla Model S P85D electric sedans as patrol cars for nearly a year, CNBC reports.

“Tesla is working with the agency to assess the vehicle's performance in our environment and to learn what are the drawbacks and positives of this type of vehicle in our fleet operation, not only on the regular transportation side, but also the future in the high-pursuit-rated vehicle arena,” said LAPD Police Administrator Vartan Yegiyan.

Right now, the LAPD doesn’t plan to add the Tesla Model S P85D to its fleet due to the electric luxury car’s hefty price, but they haven’t ruled it out as a future option.

The LAPD is also testing a BMW i3.
