There’s a vast selection of iPhone cases out there, but when it comes to choosing one that highlights your passion for all things automotive, the selection is rather limited. Does id America’s Gasket case deserve the attention of the discerning car buff? You’re darn tootin’ right it does!

The presentation is great and really sets the product off well. Other than the case, the package contains two protective films, a plastic applicator and a microfiber cloth to clean the screen. The Gasket evokes, you guessed it, the head gasket of an engine. It’s made out of brushed aluminum and available in six hues, including silver, blue and bronze. Since it’s metallic, I was afraid it might scratch up the back of my iPhone. Never fear, though, id America thought of everything and lined the back of the case with suede.

And although it’s made from aluminum, the Gasket is very thin, stiff and light. Its edges are designed to lock it into place and conform nicely to the iPhone’s contours. However, it fights so tightly that you have to be careful not to scratch the sides of your phone when you install it. The case protects everything except the screen, but as I mentioned before the package includes screen protectors, so you’re all set on that front.

The iPhone’s controls (volume, vibrate and sleep mode) remain perfectly accessible, as do the connector, speaker and microphone. And it doesn’t prevent you from plugging in 3.5 mm headphones either. That being said, when I used my slightly thicker auxiliary wire to listen to some music in the car, it rubbed up against the case and damaged it a little. Around back, the Gasket doesn’t block the camera lens or flash.

I used the Gasket for a few weeks and only have good things to say about it. It’s still in good condition and scratch-free, and it still perfectly moulds itself to my phone’s shape. I did notice one snag, and that’s that I sometimes lost a bar of reception. After several tests with an iPhone 4S and an iPhone 4, it appears to be an occasional issue and one that occurs only in certain places, so it’s nothing to be alarmed about. I loved the id America Gasket and its attractive its design. And coupled with the carbon fiber skin (also by id America), it’s simply irresistible!
