Available since last October, the GO LIVE 1535 M is the first GPS from Dutch company TomTom to offer HD Traffic and LIVE services in Canada. LIVE allows you to browse through applications like Yelp, Expedia and TripAdvisor as well as Twitter and Google, while HD Traffic provides real-time traffic updates.

I was pretty impressed by the TomTom GO LIVE 1535 M, I have to say, as much by its super compact design as its helpful features. Just 3.5 cm thick, the slim little device is ultra portable, and its modern styling fits in nicely with the rest of the cabin. The 5” touch screen and folding dock make for easy use as well.

HD Traffic & LIVE
HD Traffic and LIVE are now available in 20 countries and take a lot of the pain out of commuting.

I fell in love with the HD Traffic function, which I used on a daily basis. It helped me avoid traffic jams and save precious time on the road. Updating every two minutes, the system informs drivers of traffic conditions on their path, on all the main and secondary roads across Canada. I was impressed with the precision of HD Traffic, which automatically adjusts your estimated arrival time.

And all of LIVE’s services are just as spot on. They prove incredibly useful if you travel a lot, putting Yelp, TripAdvisor and Expedia at your fingertips. Yelp will help you find a decent restaurant based on user reviews, TripAdvisor suggests accommodations according to your needs and Expedia allows you to browse hotels in the area by price and services.

But that’s not all! You can use Twitter to let your followers know what time you’ll be arriving, check out local weather forecasts, look stuff up on Google and even find out where the best gas prices are in the area. Unfortunately, the latter feature wasn’t working when I tested the GO LIVE out.

Worth the money?
For $279.95, the TomTom GO LIVE 1535 M does a remarkable job, thanks in part to the awesome HD Traffic and LIVE features. However, the purchase price includes a 12-month subscription, and to renew LIVE you have to shell out $59.95 per year.

If you’re the type of guy or gal who keeps their smartphone close by in the car and has Internet access, this GPS may not be for you. On the other hand, if you’re looking to shake that particular habit or just want to avoid traffic jams, the TomTom GO LIVE 1535 M is exactly what you need!
