THE NEW TOTALLY REDESIGNED CHRYSLER SEBRING, MUCH AMERICAN, A LITTLE EUROPEAN

The coupe is different

As mentionned earlier, the coupe version of the Sebring will not share the same platform as the sedan. The coupe will use a lenghtened Mitsubishi Eclipse platform and therefore, its optional engine will be a Mitsubishi 3.0 liter V-6 (base engine will remain the Chrysler 2.4 four-cylinder). What?s interesting is that the five-speed manual transmission is now available with both the four and the V-6. The coupe?s V-6 yields 200 hp (as for the sedan) but it is faster than the American 2.7 liter found in the sedan. It can reach the 100 km/h mark at least one second faster.

Not only is the chassis different but so is the interior. The dashboard has a more «Japanese», more Eclipse flavor to it. No wonder since it?s a sportier car. Actually, the whole interior has a different appearance. Once again, there are two body styles in this model, the LX and the LXi. Once again, the driving impressions on this car are much improved over the older generation. And with its sportier look comes a sportier roadhandling (thanks to Mitsubishi). The most important drawback would be getting into the rear seat, as for any coupe. The good side of it is that there is ample space for two in the back (a third passenger could fit in but would not enjoy as much comfort).

And then, there is the convertible

DaimlerChrysler will soon introduce the convertible version of that new Sebring generation. Once again, its chassis will be provided by Mitsubishi but we will have to wait before driving it. At the Seattle introduction, DaimlerChrysler had brought along a prototype version of the convertible. But it was for static display only. Though it should go on sale somewhere next January, we do not expect to drive it before next spring, which is logical in the Province of Quebec.

Pros:
- A beautiful redesign
- Very solid ride
- Better engines
- A lot more

Cons:
- High trunk sill
- Rear access difficult (coupe)
- Still some tire noise
- A little expensive (compared to a base Intrepid)
