Gasoline-only cars not quite up to challenging the hybrids

Most motorists, it’s safe to say, want to minimize how much of their hard-earned money disappears at the pump. The growing number of hybrid and all-electric vehicles being offered by manufacturers attests to this demand for greater fuel economy. See our comprehensive guide to hybrid and electric cars for 2017!

Now that all of the 2017 and many of the new 2018 models available on the market in Canada have received their official fuel consumption ratings from Natural Resources Canada, Auto123.com waded into the numbers to determine which of them are the most fuel-efficient vehicles currently available to Canadian consumers. For the purposes of this exercise we did not consider plug-in hybrid or 100% electric models, which are able to complete most of their transportation duties without using much or any fuel at all; non-plug-in hybrids, on the other hand, were fair game in our view and are included here.

And unsurprisingly, these conventional hybrid models take all 10 spots on the list! In other words every one of these models will cost you less at the pump than the most fuel-efficient gasoline-only vehicle – the little Mitsubishi Mirage, which burns as little as 6.0L/100 km on average.

10. (tied) 2018 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid SE – Average of 5.7 L/100 km
