Kia shows Toronto it's new Borrego 7-Passenger SUV

Kia's upcoming large SUV is called the Borrego and it's one of the most talked-about vehicles to come out of Korea at the Toronto Auto Show. The new model was presented to the media at the show today.

The 7-passenger ute is set to take a place above the Sorrento in the growing automakers lineup. Auto show enthusiasts will recognize styling cues from the Mesa concept that was released a few years back in Detroit.

Borrego is powered by a V6 engine as standard equipment, and it will optionally house the first V8 (rated at 300 horsepower) to find its way behind the Kia badge. It's not certain whether it's the same V8 that Hyundai will offer in their Genesis sedan which goes on sale around the same time--but it probably is.

The new SUV will be built in Korea, where it's available with a V6 diesel engine. There's no official word if this powerplant will make its way to Canadian soil anytime soon, though it's unlikely at best.

Borrego should be on sale by this summer as a 2009 model. It's built from the same platform as the Sorrento, and both will continue to utilize a body-on-frame construction for toughness and strength.

Also, the production version of the Soul, a small SUV/crossover, will turn up within the next year.
