Volvo's clean and green XC60 rolls out at Toronto

A new bio-ethanol powered concept from Scandinavian automaker Volvo just took the stage at the Toronto Auto Show. In contrast to hybrids and diesel technology seen elsewhere, Volvo has taken a less disruptive approach to alternative fuel with its XC60- which runs on Bio Ethanol.

It's a renewable corn-based fuel source that's becoming more and more well known for its ability to reduce emissions. Bio Ethanol fills the tank of the XC60, which is intended as a clean-burning mid-sized SUV.

The 3.2 litre inline six cylinder engine on board is tuned to run on the clean fuel, and it's output is rated at 265 horsepower and 251 lb.-ft of torque.

This engine was originally introduced in the S80, and it promises 0-60 in around 8 seconds on the way to a top speed of over 140 miles per hour. Volvo estimates mileage at 12.3L / 100km- not bad for an AWD machine carrying a full selection of safety equipment.

Benefits of bio-ethanol include a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of up to 80 percent compared to conventional gasoline only.

"We believe that FlexiFuel has great potential for larger engine sizes and we are planning to expand our range of bio-ethanol powered engines in the coming years," says Magnus Jonsson, Senior Vice President, Research & Development at Volvo Cars.

Ethanol is blended in 40 percent of the U.S. gasoline supply, and there are already about 1,000 filling stations for it in the United States.

A production version of the XC60 has been confirmed, and it will strongly resemble the XC60 Concept.
